INTERVISTA A ANNA SIGILLO

Abbiamo il piacere di condividere con Voi, l'intervista che la traduttrice Anna Sigillo ha rilasciato alla nostra Shanmei (Traduzione dall'Italiano all'inglese di Anna Sigillo). 

Benvenuta Anna, parlaci di te, raccontaci il tuo percorso di studi.
Welcome Anna, let’s talk about you, tell us about your studies.

Salve e grazie per questa opportunità di far conoscere meglio il mio lavoro ai lettori. Ho studiato all’università “L’Orientale” di Napoli, una delle più rinomate in ambito linguistico, insieme a quella di Venezia. Ho studiato sia inglese che giapponese, e mi sono innamorata sia delle lingue che delle relative culture di questi Paesi.
Hi, thanks for this chance to let people know more about me. I studied at the “Orientale University” in Naples, one of the most famous universities for languages here in Italy, along with the one in Venice. I’ve been studying both English and Japanese and I definitely fell in love with these two languages and cultures.

Come è nato il tuo amore per la traduzione?
How did you find out about your love for translation?

Amo leggere, e semplicemente ho deciso di provare, e devo dire che mi è risultato così naturale … Ho semplicemente aperto il testo in inglese sul lato sinistro dello schermo e una pagina vuota nell’altro. E allo stesso tempo, mi sono ritrovata a godermi la lettura e creare qualcosa di nuovo. E’ stata una bella esperienza.
I love reading, and I just tried once, and it happened to be so natural, I just opened the English text on the left side of the screen and an empty page on the other side. At the same time I was enjoying the reading and creating something new. It was a great experience.

Come è iniziato il tuo lavoro di traduttrice? Quale è stato il primo testo che hai tradotto?
How did you start working in this field? What’s the first book you translated?

All’inizio, ho cercato opportunità di traduzione su internet e mi sono imbattuta in questo scrittore italiano, Claudio Ruggieri, che scrive in genere romanzi polizieschi, e stava cercando un traduttore per diverse sue opere. Di solito preferisco tradurre dall’inglese all’italiano, perché mi risulta più naturale, ma decisi di cogliere questa opportunità, ed infatti ho tradotto per lui ben quattro libri.
In the first place, I looked for translation job opportunities on internet and happened to meet this Italian writer, Claudio Ruggieri, who uses to write crime stories, and was looking for a translator for several books. I usually prefer translating from English to Italian because I think it suits me most, but I decided to take the chance and translated four books for him.

Hai fatto traduzioni per Case Editrici, Agenzie di marketing o pubblicità?
Have you ever worked for a publishing house, Marketing company or something like this

Sfortunatamente, non ho ancora avuto l’occasione di entrare in contatto con case editrici; ho sempre trovato gli autori in rete, e, ovviamente, guadagno su percentuale di vendita, il che non è una grande cosa, in realtà. Ma amo tradurre, quindi continuerò e chissà un giorno capiterà la mia grande occasione.
Unfortunately, I’ve never had the chance to work with a publishing house; I’ve always met the authors on internet, and, you know, I earn on percentage, not that good. But I do love translating so I’ll continue and maybe one day I’ll have my big chance.

Sappiamo che traduci autori stranieri che poi si auto-pubblicano in italiano. Come è nata questa idea? Quali opere hai tradotto fino ad oggi? E perché le hai scelte?
We know you usually work with foreigner writers who take care themselves of the publication. How this idea was born? Which books have you been translating until now? And why did you choose them?

Come vi ho detto precedentemente, preferisco tradurre dall’inglese, quindi di solito ho a che fare con scrittori stranieri. Ho trovato questo sito, Babelcube, che mette semplicemente in contatto scrittori e traduttori e li aiuta a lavorare insieme.
Per la lista completa delle opere che ho tradotto finora, potete dare un’occhiata alla mia pagina facebook “Anna Sigillo Translator”; finora ho tradotto quattro romanzi polizieschi per lo scrittore Claudio Ruggieri, tre libri della scrittrice Kristen Middleton, e di sicuro ne tradurrò un quarto; ho, poi, tradotto diverse opere minori e sto già lavorando ad un libro bellissimo di Dutch, chiamato “Al di sopra della legge”, la storia davvero avvincente di un agente dell’FBI corrotto che è costretto a scendere a compromessi e fare addirittura di peggio, pur di evitare la prigione.
Ho scelto questo libro in particolare, perché avevo voglia di qualcosa di diverso, dopo aver tradotto tre libri dello stesso genere e prima di tradurne un quarto.
Ho scelto, invece, “Vaganti della Notte” perché sono ossessionata, positivamente, dalla figura del vampiro, e sapevo che il libro mi sarebbe di sicuro piaciuto, ed io cerco sempre di tradurre libri dai quali possa trarre anche un piacere personale, e questo libro devo dire che è stata piacevolissima scoperta. Allo stesso tempo sapevo che l’argomento ‘vampiri’ era in voga in Italia al momento, tra le adolescenti e non solo, quindi ho pensato che potesse riscuotere un buon successo. A parte il piacere personale nel tradurre, infatti, questo è il motivo principale per cui scelgo un determinato libro, non soltanto perché guadagno su percentuale, ma perché credo fermamente che il compito di un traduttore sia proprio quello di far conoscere ai lettori dei libri che considera buoni e d’effetto, e che questi non avrebbero mai potuto leggere senza di lui.
As I told you before, I prefer translating from English, so I usually deal with foreigner authors. I happened to find this web site, Babelcube, whose purpose is to help translators and writers meeting and working together.
If you want to see the full list of books I’ve been translating until now, you can take a look at my personal Facebook page, “Anna Sigillo Translator”; by the way I translated four crime stories for Claudio Ruggieri, three books by Kristen Middleton, and I’m going to translate a fourth one for sure; I also translated several smaller works and now I’m working on a great book by Dutch, called “Above the law” , a really interesting, engaging story about a corrupt FBI agent, who has to settle for a compromise and do something even worse not to go to jail.
I chose this book because I wanted something different after being translating three books about the same topic, and before starting the forth one.
I chose Night Roamers because I’m so into the vampire world, and I knew the book was perfect to me; I always try to have fun while working and this book was definitely a great surprise. At the same time I knew that Vampires World is the topic of the moment, I mean, among the teenager and not only, so I thought it could have had a lot of readers. That’s the main reason why I usually choose a book to translate, because I earn from percentage, but more because that’s the translator’s magic, to let people read something great they would have never had the chance to read without him. 

Hai riscontrato difficoltà nel far accettare agli autori questo nuovo modo di pubblicarsi in paesi stranieri o ne avevano già sentito parlare?
Have you had problems to explain this new way of publishing to the authors or did they already know about it?

E’ stato stesso uno scrittore a farmi conoscere questo sito e quindi tutti gli autori che ho incontrato lì, erano già nel giro; ho dovuto solo seguire la corrente.
It was a writer himself to let me know about this possibility so all the writers I met later, in Babelcube of course, already knew about it, I just had to follow the river.

Se questo tipo di pubblicazione diventasse sempre più diffuso, pensi che gli Editori non avrebbero più ragione di esistere o rimarrebbe solo una pubblicazione alternativa?
Do you think this publishing could ever replace the publishing houses’ work or will they always coexist?

Assolutamente no, voglio dire, Babelcube lavora soltanto con ebook, itunes e libri che puoi pagare e scaricare su un dispositivo elettronico. Personalmente non lo preferisco, io tifo per i libri cartacei, quelli che puoi tenere tra le mani, dei quali puoi sentire il profumo, che puoi tenere a casa se ti sono veramente piaciuti. Non credo che questo modo di pubblicare prenderà il posto delle case editrici e spero vivamente che non accada.

Absolutely not, I mean, Babelcube works only with ebooks, and itunes, the kind of books you can pay for and download. I personally don’t like it, I do stand for paper books, the ones you can hold in your hands and smell, and take home with you when you really enjoyed it. I don’t think this publishing would ever take publishing houses’ place, and hope it won’t.

Quanto tempo serve per portare a termine la traduzione di un romanzo?

How long does it take to translate a book?

Il tempo impiegato per tradurre un libro, dipende da molti fattori, dal tempo che dedichi alla traduzione, dalla mole del libro, dall’argomento che può essere più o meno complicato, dal linguaggio usato nel libro, lo slang richiede sempre molto tempo in più per essere interpretato e tradotto; dipende anche da quanto il libro ti prenda, perché se ti stai godendo la lettura oltre che lavorare, non vedi l’ora di leggere di più e quindi tradurre di più, lavorando molto più velocemente. Per quanto mi riguarda, se un libro mi piace, ci metto circa un mese, il tempo che molti impiegano per leggerlo un libro; ad esempio, ho ripreso la traduzione dell’ultimo libro su cui stavo lavorando, dal capitolo quattro, nella prima metà di Settembre, e il 5 Ottobre la traduzione era pronta.

The time you need to translate a single book, highly depends on several things, on the time you dedicate to translation in your everyday life, on the book’s size, on the topic which could be more or less complicated, on the language used inside the book, slang always take a lot of time more to be translated and understood; it also depends on how the book got you, because if you’re enjoying the reading, you can not wait to read and translate more, of course. To me, it usually takes no more than one month, the time some people actually spend to read a book; for instance, I started to translate, the last book from the forth chapter on the first half of September, and on October 5^th the translation was completed.

Tradurre è il tuo lavoro principale, o fai altre attività?

Is translation your only employment or you have another one?

No, non lo è. Nell’ultimo anno ho lavorato come guida turistica facendo tour in lingua inglese presso la “Napoli Sotterranea”, una delle attrazioni turistiche più famose qui a Napoli, che ti porta quaranta metri sotto il livello del manto stradale per visitare le cisterne dell’antico acquedotto greco-romano che furono poi utilizzate come rifugi anti bombardamento durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, e anche presso l’antico teatro di Nerone, dove appunto l’imperatore era solito esibirsi. E’ stata una bellissima esperienza, ma ad un certo punto ho deciso che era tempo di trovare qualcosa di meglio, e al momento sono concentrata nella ricerca, e nel frattempo do qualche lezione di inglese  e mi godo la traduzione.

No, it’s not. In the last year I’ve been giving tours in english for Napoli Sotteranea, one the most famous attraction here in Naples, that takes you forty meters under the street level to show you the ancient Greek and Roman aqueduct that was also used as bomb shelter during World War 2, and also for the Roman Theater where Emperor Nero used to perform. I enjoyed the experience so much, but then I decided it was time to find something better, and I’m just focusing on the search, giving private lessons and translating in the meanwhile.

Preferisci una traduzione più letterale o creativa? O un mix delle due a seconda dei casi?

Do you prefer the literal or creative translation? Or a mixture of the two?

Penso fortemente che la traduzione sia interpretazione, perché non puoi tradurre il significato profondo delle cose se traduci letteralmente, perché lingue diverse hanno modi diversi di dire le cose, e tu sei l’unica fonte che i  tuoi lettori hanno, l’unico a vedere la versione originale, quindi se ti perdi la profondità, le sfumature, il significato che c’è dietro le parole stesse, loro saranno perse per sempre, e i tuoi lettori non avranno mai l’opportunità di sperimentarle, di provare le stesse sensazioni che hai provato tu.

I think that translation is interpretation, because you can not communicate the deep meaning of what you translate if you translate it literally, because different languages have different ways to tell things, and you’re the only source for your readers, the only one who see the original version, so if you lose the depths, the perspective, the meaning behind the words, they’re lost forever and your readers will never be able to experience them.

Esistono penali in caso di mancata consegna del lavoro nei tempi stabiliti? Ti è mai successo di incorrervi?

Are there penalties if you don’t respect your dead line? Have it ever happened to you?

Non esistono su Babelcube, perchè l’intera cosa si basa sul rapporto tra scrittore e traduttore, quindi se ti serve altro tempo, chiedi una proroga, anche se, è vero, esiste la possibilità che l’autore non l’accetti ma visto che non è lui a pagarti, ma le vendite stesse, non può avanzare pretese di nessun tipo, quindi non credo accada mai, anche perché gli scrittori non hanno niente da perdere, per loro è solo una occasione di far conoscere le loro opere all’estero.

They don’t exist on Babelcube, because it’s based on the relationship between writer and translator, so if you need more time, you just ask for an extension; of course the writer could not accept it, but I think it never happens, you know, writers have nothing to lose, it’s only a chance for them to let your book be known abroad.

E veniamo al tasto più dolente, i pagamenti. Come ti tuteli dai committenti morosi?

Let’s hit the sore spot, the payments. How do you protect yourself from bad payers?

Lavorando con Babelcube, è lui che si occupa di tutto, ti manda i soldi delle vendite dopo aver trattenuto una percentuale per se stesso e una per lo scrittore. Mi è capitato di lavorare su commissione, e in quel caso ho semplicemente inviato la prima parte della traduzione, aspettato i soldi, e inviato la seconda parte. Ha funzionato, ma non credo sia un metodo sicurissimo.

Working with Babelcube, they take care of everything, sending you money as soon as they get them from the sales, taking a percentage for themselves and one for the writer. It happened to me to translate on commission, and I just sent the first part of the translation first, then waited for the money, and then sent the rest. It worked, although I admit it’s not that safe.

Hai mai vinto premi dedicati a i traduttori?

Have you ever won awards for your translations?

No, non ho mai lavorato su libri abbastanza importanti da ricevere un premio.

No, I haven’t. Never worked on something big enough to deserve an award.

Quale è l’ultimo libro che hai tradotto? Che difficoltà hai riscontrato?

Tell us about the last book you translated. Have you had problems?

L’ultimo libro che ho tradotto è “Vengeance” di Kristen Middleton. Non ho avuto particolari problemi, perché si collocava perfettamente sulla scia dei libri che avevo già tradotto per lei.

The last book I translated was “Vengeance” by Kristen Middleton. I didn’t have real problems because it perfectly fitted the previous books I had been translating for her.

Quale è il momento più bello per un traduttore?

Which is, in your opinion, the best part of translating?

Penso che sia quando rileggi il libro per intero, come se fossi un semplice lettore. Leggere il libro tutto d’un fiato, ti fa avere una visione più completa della storia e quindi un'esperienza più profonda.

I think it’s when you read the whole book, like you’re just a reader. Reading the whole book makes you have a complete view of the story and a deeper experience.

Raccontaci un aneddoto, bizzarro, incredibile legato al tuo lavoro?

Tell us some crazy thing happened to you, related to your job.

Non penso di avere niente di particolare da raccontare. Finora la cosa più strana che mi sia successa è che qualcuno mi chieda un’intervista su quello che faccio, ma ovviamente questo lo sapete già.

I don’t think I have something amazing to tell you, the craziest thing ever happened till now is that someone asked me to have an interview about my job, but of course you already know about that.

Quale consiglio daresti ad una persona che vorrebbe intraprendere il lavoro di traduttore?

What would you suggest to someone who wants to start translating?

Penso di non averne uno, visto che non ho ancora trovato io stessa il mio posto nel mondo della traduzione. Ma una cosa posso dirla. Di tradurre sempre prima per se stessi, per conoscenza personale, per divertimento, per mantenersi in esercizio. Fare il proprio lavoro con passione ripaga sempre, in un modo o nell’altro.

I guess I really don’t have suggestions, since I haven’t found my own place in the translation world yet. But I can tell them to translate for themselves before, for they knowledge, for their entertainment, for their exercise. And if you do your job with passion, you’ll be rewarded, one way or another.

Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

Tell us about your future plans.

Non lo so proprio, sto ancora cercando di capirlo io stessa. Mi piacerebbe trovare IL lavoro della mia vita, sapete, quello che ti piace e che ti permette di crearti una vita, dandoti il tempo di avere una vita tua oltre al lavoro. Mi piacerebbe ovviamente che la traduzione o il turismo siano nel mio futuro, ma chissà.

I don’t really know, still trying to figure it out. I’d like to find THE job of my life, you know, the job you like and that allows you to create your own live, giving you the time to work and have a life at the same time. I’d really like translation or tourism were in my future, but who knows.

La diciassettenne Nikki e il suo gemello Nathan, si trasferiscono nella piccola città di Shore Lake, nel Montana, dopo che la loro madre è stata brutalmente aggredita. Quando il cadavere di una adolescente emerge dalle acque del lago durante la loro prima notte nella nuova casa, e voci sulla presenza di qualcosa di sinistro che si muove nella notte cominciano a prendere forma nel mondo reale, Nikki comincia a pensare che ciò che si muove nell'ombra, potrebbe essere molto peggio di ciò che si sono lasciati alle spalle.

Spostai un pesante baule che era nello scantinato della casa in cui io e mia madre ci eravamo appena trasferiti. Con non poca sorpresa, vidi che sotto vi era uno strano disegno. Era un cerchio con tre triangoli al suo interno.

Ogni triangolo aveva un angelo che reggeva una croce. La cosa più strana di tutte, però, era il colore, un rosso scuro che puzzava come il sangue.

Non ci pensai due volte e lo cancellai con la scopa, strofinando finché non fu scomparso completamente.

Quello che non avrei mai potuto immaginare, però, era che così facendo avevo risvegliato qualcosa, qualcosa che era rimasto intrappolato da quel disegno e che grazie me, era di nuovo libero di uccidere.
